ELIGIBILITY

The program is open to students who are currently enrolled in undergraduate studies (or who graduated the semester immediately prior to their appointment). Students are recruited from local colleges and universities, but applications are accepted from any undergraduate student.

HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS

Application Process
Positions are available year-round and are listed with employment offices and academic departments at local colleges and universities. Application information can also be requested from the American Red Cross, Santa Barbara County Chapter. Students must submit a cover letter indicating the position(s) in which they are interested and a current resume (no other application is needed).

Selection Process
All applications received for a particular intern position that meet the program criteria are reviewed. The chapter determines which individuals will be interviewed. The department sponsoring the internship selects the candidate who is the best match for the position requirements. The candidate(s) chosen is sent an offer for the position.

Orientation Process
Once the selection process is complete, interns attend an in-processing session to complete human resources paperwork and attend an orientation meeting for the new interns. This meeting provides an overview of the program expectations, explains how the program works and reviews the roles and responsibilities of each program participant.

Program Monitoring
During the internship, interns meet with the program coordinator once a month to share progress on assignments. This ongoing monitoring allows for early intervention in resolving any problems that may arise.

Training and Other Opportunities
Training and other opportunities during the internship include-

  • Orientation to the American Red Cross
  • Orientation to the Santa Barbara County Chapter and skills training needed for the project.
  • CPR/first aid or introduction to disaster courses, if appropriate.

Closing Session
At the end of the internship, a final meeting is held to celebrate individual successes and evaluate the program.
