2008 Volunteers of the Month

April 2008

North County: Bobbie Alleman

Bobbie Alleman has been volunteering with us since 2006. She has volunteered her time as a CPR/First Aid Instructor and also participated in Disaster Trainings. Bobbie teaches two to three classes a month and is an excellent receptionist for the Santa Maria Office. Recently, Bobbie has become more involved in Disaster Services and is really enjoying it. She is truly dedicated and is always willing to help out. We want to thank you, Bobbie, for all your hard work and dedication to this organization. You are a super trooper!

South County: Patricia Elbe

Patricia Eble is a fantastic volunteer, who has been of great help to the Chapter. Patricia has setup a tracking program for Disaster Services accounting and prepares financial reports submitted to National Headquarters. She has also organized a disbursing order tracking system to ensure appropriate accountability of the Disaster Services Department. During the Zaca Fire, Patricia managed the accounting functions and was here everyday to complete necessary reports. She has been an enormous help in Public Support by being available on a regular basis to do the necessary filing. Patricia was instrumental last year when she first began working here by reviewing each donor file to make sure that the correspondence and other materials were in chronological order. She has a terrific attention to detail. Patricia is a great asset to our Chapter and we are very grateful to be able to count on her assistance!

March 2008

North County: Mariah Melena

Mariah Melena - North County Volunteer of the Month for February 2008Mariah Melena came on board this year and has already shown a consistent dedication to the Red Cross. A high school student at Pioneer High, Mariah helps out at our office every Monday and Tuesday after school. This young lady has followed her father’s footsteps in lending us a hand. Her father, Seth Melena, is a Volunteer Instructor and an Authorized Provider Instructor for OSR Enterprises. We are delighted with the family's involvement in our Chapter. Mariah helps out with every type of assignment, from entering records into CHERS, to stamping tons of certificates, to helping organize our warehouse. No matter how exciting or how boring the job, she always accepts it with a smile. She is an inspiration to the upcoming generation of this organization. We enjoy her presence and are honored to say that Mariah Melena is our North County Volunteer of the Month for March!

South County: Roberta Ainicart

Jim CourtwrightRoberta is an amazing volunteer! She has taken the lead for South County Disaster Mental Health and is doing a fantastic job! She also enters the numerous Disaster Training Courses into our database. During an emergency, this allows us to assign Volunteers to jobs based on their expertise and training. In addition to all her work at the Chapter, Roberta also volunteers her time as a Disaster Mental Health Worker by offering counseling to clients facing the devastation of a disaster. In addition, Roberta and her therapy dog, Echo, volunteer their time at Cottage Hospital -- providing comfort and companionship to patients. Roberta is an invaluable resource to our Chapter, and we are very fortunate to have her volunteering with us!

February 2008

North County: Mel Raveling

Mel Raveling - North County Volunteer of the Month for February 2008Mel has been a great help around the Santa Maria Office. He does everything from answering phones, client case work, Food Services Leader, active Disaster Action Team member, and assisting with the shelter trailers. Mel was a huge help when the Zaca Fire took place and continues to educate the community by teaching Disaster classes. Mel has been with the Santa Barbara County Chapter since 2007 and has truly been a dedicated volunteer. We all appreciate Mel very much and know that anytime we need him, he is right there to give a helping hand. Way to go Mel!

South County: Jim Courtwright

Jim CourtwrightJim has helped the Safety & Preparedness Department with the record keeping of course records from all the First Aid/CPR courses that occur across Santa Barbara County. He has also worked on our Instructor files and kept them up to date. Jim comes into the Chapter always ready to help with any other projects. Thanks to him we have been able to track hard copy course record sheets when our database is not accessible. His work has ensured that we continue to offer excellent customer service to our Instructors, students and community members. We can barely get the course records out fast enough to keep up with Jim! He is an incredible volunteer and we appreciate all he does!

North County: Nona Gibbs

Nona Gibbs - North County Volunteer of the Month for January 2008Congratulations, Nona Gibbs! Nona is our Volunteer of the Month for January 2008. She is one of our DSHR volunteers who came to our Chapter last year from the Orange County Chapter where she served as the Public Information Officer. Nona was a point person for media contact. She has been volunteering for the Red Cross for several years and brings a great deal of knowledge and experience with her. She’s quite at home answering phones, registering students for classes, and general office work. You name it, Nona can do it! She helped us build our event “TO GO” boxes, served as the point person for the Santa Maria “Parade of Lights” holiday event, and assisted the Fire Department with the fire safety trailer at school campuses in both North and South County. Nona is also our Government Liaison Officer for the North County Emergency Services Committee. Thank you, Nona, for all that you do for our Santa Barbara County Red Cross family.
