Major Achievements Between July 1, 2005 and June 30, 2006 Fiscal Year

  • Hired Janet L. Stanley, M.A., as the new CEO of the American Red Cross, Santa Barbara County Chapter.
  • Significantly increased public awareness of Red Cross programs and services through targeted media relations and marketing campaigns.
  • Partnered with the Fire Safe Council, 211 Helpline, and EPIC (Emergency Public Information Communicators) to increase our effectiveness in communicating with First Responders and other key community groups before, during, and after a disaster.
  • Successfully moved our Lompoc office to the Anderson Recreation Center on West Walnut Avenue in Lompoc.

Health & Safety Training

  • Taught First Aid and CPR Lifesaving Skills to over 10,000 Santa Barbara County residents.
  • Trained 2,248 people in Lifeguarding and Water Safety Skills.
  • Instructed 257 young people in Babysitter’s Training and Child Care Classes.

Emergency Preparedness

  • Delivered Emergency Preparedness materials to more than 1,500 homes in wildfire risk areas and over 5,000 others in Santa Barbara County.
  • Distributed disaster preparedness and health and safety materials to over 13,900 school children, seniors and community members throughout Santa Barbara County.
  • Delivered 115 presentations on emergency preparedness to seniors and community groups throughout the county.
  • Named the official sponsor for the Emergency Public Information Communicators (EPIC). This new group helps ensure timely dissemination of information to other First Responders and the public when major wildfires, floods, mudslides or other disasters occur in Santa Barbara County.

Disaster Response

  • Deployed more than 220 trained local Red Cross Volunteers to assist in the Hurricane Relief Effort in Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi and other states.
  • Assisted over 50 families devastated by loss of housing, clothing, furnishings and other personal possessions due to home fires or other disasters, locally and from other areas.
  • Trained more than 600 local Disaster Volunteers in how to help the Red Cross respond to local and national disasters.

Armed Forces Emergency Services

  • Delivered emergency communications, counseling and other crisis assistance that helped over 100 military personnel connect with their families.
  • Held six presentations for over 180 military families on Red Cross services available to active duty personnel.

Volunteer and Youth Support

  • Depended upon assistance of more than 1,700 Red Cross volunteers throughout the county, an increase of 600 volunteers since Hurricane Katrina hit.
  • Established Red Cross Clubs fostering leadership development, safety and disaster preparedness skills in nine local high schools and at Vandenberg Air Force Base for a total of 12 Red Cross Clubs throughout the County.
